As much as one-third of Chinese air pollution is related to goods that are exported from China, and some of that pollution blows across the Pacific. We find that, while outsourcing of manufacturing from the US to China has probably improved air quality in the eastern U.S. (where such manufacturing was previously located), it therefore worsens air quality in the western US.

                                            

The rapid economic growth in China over the past decade is the great expansion in the production of
goods for export (1). Although growth has slowed since the global financial crisis, between 2000 and 2007 the volume of Chinese exports grew by 390% (2). As the Chinese economy has grown, the economic structure has also changed, transitioning from a net importer to a large net exporter of energy-intensive industrial products. At the same time, China increased combustion of fossil fuels, relatively low combustion efficiency, and weak emission control measures have also led to drastic increases in air pollutants such as sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), black carbon (BC), and primary organic carbon (OC).

                                 

China becomes the world’s largest emitter of anthropogenic air pollutants, and measurable amounts of Chinese pollution are transported via the atmosphere to other countries, including the United
States. However, a large fraction of Chinese emissions is due to manufacture of goods for foreign consumption.

Liu Chuanzhi, founder of both the  Legend Holdings Ltd. and the sub-company of China's computer giant Lenovo Group Ltd., has turned his attention to fields beyond IT. The company's entry into agriculture could be the most remarkable one:  Chen Shaopeng, the newly appointed senior vice president of Legend Holdings, will lead a new core business line: modern agriculture.

Chen, who Joined Lenovo in 1993, is widely known for his rare talent in sales. He set a sales record by bringing Lenovo a 585% year-on-year sales growth. To transfer such a tiger commander to lead Legend Holding's modern agriculture efforts is an apparent declaration of the company's ardent and aggressive pursuit in the agricultural arena. And that deserves considering how big the "cake" could be.
                                           

According to official figures, as of August 31, the revenue and net profit of 54 listed agricultural companies in 2011 stood, respectively, at RMB 67.12 billion ($10.57 billion) and RMB2.95 billion ($465 million), increased respectively by 28.9% and 49.6% from last year. Agriculture belongs to the high price-to-earnings ratio in Legend Holdings.

But it is not the only company to explore the agricultural sector. According to statistics released by  Qingke group, a Chinese risk-based investment research institution, from 2006 to the June 2013, China had 114 investment cases in agriculture. The unveiled sum involved in 104 of the cases stood at $1.76 billion. The year 2010 accounted for the largest investment sum, with 47 cases unveiled totaling $891 million. Liu Ka, top manager with China Sunshine Insurance Group Corporation Ltd., told reporters "It's a great chance for Legend Holdings in stepping into agricultural sector; there are boundless business opportunities there."

Legend Holdings is not the only Chinese company with a IT background to step into agriculture. Ding Lei, CEO of China's top-rated web portal NetEase, has put money into pig-rearing; while Liu Qiangdong, CEO of China's leading B2C e-commerce company Jingdong Mall, announced that he has invested in growing rice to sell online. Take Legend Holdings as an example: It recently purchased mostly traditional companies such as those engaged in livestock rearing, aquaculture and fruit cultivation. How to use information technology to transform those traditional businesses has proven extremely difficult for the group. Moreover, the current situation in China has ruled out the possibility of vast developing modern agriculture.

But Li also affirmed that Legend Holdings was determined to develop modern agriculture. "We would do modern agriculture as an industry, we do not depend largely on agriculture to contribute to overall profit in 2014, and we do not demand immediate returns from modern agriculture." Said by Liu.

Taiwan food safety issues solved by labels disclosure?

A proposed plan to disclose information about food manufacturers on food packages will create unnecessary trade barriers and has been a concern for foreign investors in retail and the pharmaceutical industry. The government has received complaints over the proposed regulation from foreign investors, among them international retail giant Costco.

                              

Costco made it clear that it would have difficulties following the law if the provision is adopted, because information about the manufacturers of its store brand, Kirkland, is a trade secret. Other food producers, including Coca-Cola Co, raised concerns over a proposed provision that requires the disclosure of all ingredients used in a food product in a registry system administered by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

                                   

                                           

  

In an effort to discourage Coca Cola from withdrawing from Taiwan, the government has worked out a solution to exempt it from another proposed rule mandating the labeling of all its ingredients, but the company still finds the registration requirement unacceptable. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has loosened up on medical marijuana. It will still be illegal in New York to grow marijuana or import specialized plants from outside the state,. The number of hospitals authorized to dispense marijuana will be limited, and its use will be restricted to certain diseases, such as cancer and glaucoma.

For those of you not familiar with hydroponics and aeroponics, I will leave you with a short discussion their differences.  Aeroponics is essentially a system in which roots are suspended in the air, and a mist of nutrient-rich solution is sprayed on the roots.  This system is also entirely enclosed to keep a high level of humidity which prevents the roots from drying out.  A hydroponic system allows the roots to be submerged in the nutrient-rich solution which usually has an air stone to provide fresh oxygen to the roots.  So the main difference is the availability of oxygen to the roots.  Aeroponics has greater availability of oxygen than hydroponics.

In more than half of European countries, there are not enough honeybees to pollinate crops, according to new research. The shortage is particularly acute in Britain which has only a quarter of the honeybees required. The number of honeybees in the UK and elsewhere has been in decline in recent years, with both pesticide use and disease being blamed for losses.

                           

The demand for insect pollination has grown 5 times as fast the number of honeybee colonies in Europe, according to new research conducted at the University of Reading. The research shows that famers are increasingly relying on wild pollinators, such bumble bees, solitary bees and hoverflies even though there are few safeguards to protect their numbers.

According to data collected from 2005 to 2010, more than 1/2 of European countries, including the U.K., Germany, France and Italy, did not have enough honeybees to pollinate crops. The U.K. was worst hit by the shortage and has only a fourth of the bees they require. The only country with a bigger deficit was Moldova, one of the poorest countries on the continent.

                                        

There will be a growing disconnection between agricultural and environmental policies across Europe. Farmers are encouraged to grow oil crops, yet there is not enough joined-up thinking about how to help the insects that will pollinate them.

New Year fireworks will make it worse against a 1950s London, a very serious haze tragedy, which causing thousands of people died of air poisoning. Do you hope that China become so? In fact, the heavy regional haze in China's most important agricultural areas may be cutting food production there by as much as one-third. Covering a million square kilometers or more, the haze scatters and absorbs solar radiation, reducing the amount of sunlight reaching key rice and winter wheat crops.
